OptumServe is a health services company contracted by the Department of Veterans Affairs to conduct Compensation and Pension (C&P) exams for veterans filing disability claims. The exam isn't a treatment appointment. It's an assessment. For veterans going through an appeal, OptumServe may also conduct exams ordered as part of a Board of Veterans' Appeals or Supplemental Claim review. If the VA schedules you at OptumServe, attendance is mandatory. Missing the appointment without rescheduling can result in your claim being denied or significantly delayed.

The VA schedules your OptumServe exam after you file your disability claim or appeal. You'll receive notification by mail or through your VA.gov account with the date, time, and location. Bring all relevant medical records, service records, and any private medical opinions supporting your claim. At the appointment, the examiner will review your file and ask about your symptoms, how they affect your daily life and work, and when they began. Be specific and honest about your worst days, not your best. The exam typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes depending on the number of conditions being evaluated. After the exam, the examiner submits the DBQ to the VA and you won't receive a copy directly, though you can request it through the VA later. Your rating decision typically follows within several weeks to months after the exam is submitted.
