What Is AMVETS

AMVETS (American Veterans) is a congressionally chartered Veterans Service Organization that represents veterans in VA disability claims at no cost. Unlike some VSOs that charge fees, AMVETS operates on a nonprofit model and accredits representatives through the VA to advocate on your behalf during the entire claims process, from initial filing through appeals.

AMVETS Role in VA Disability Claims

When you file a VA disability claim, AMVETS representatives can help you gather medical evidence, identify service-connected conditions you may have overlooked, and structure your claim to align with VA rating criteria. They understand the nuances of the VA rating schedule and how conditions are evaluated at different percentages (10%, 20%, 40%, etc.). If you receive a rating decision you believe is too low, AMVETS will guide you through the appeals process, including filing a Notice of Disagreement or a higher-level review.

AMVETS representatives have access to VA databases and can track your claim status in real time. They can also request your C&P exam results and help interpret them, which is critical since the examiner's findings directly influence your rating. Many veterans work with AMVETS to develop nexus letters from their own physicians when the VA's examination seems incomplete or contradicts existing medical records.

How to Work with AMVETS

  • Locate your nearest AMVETS office by visiting their website or calling their national service line. They maintain offices in all 50 states.
  • Bring your discharge papers (DD-214), any service-connected medical records, and current treatment records to your first appointment.
  • Your AMVETS representative will complete VA Form 21-22 (Appointment of Veterans Service Organization as Claimant's Representative), which authorizes them to act on your behalf.
  • AMVETS will file your claim electronically through VA.gov and follow up on all correspondence until a decision is issued.
  • If you receive a denial or low rating, AMVETS can file an appeal within one year of the rating decision.

Key Advantages Over Self-Filing

  • Free representation. AMVETS does not charge application fees, hourly rates, or contingency fees.
  • Knowledge of the VA rating schedule. Representatives understand how conditions like PTSD, herniated discs, or tinnitus are rated and what evidence carries the most weight.
  • Appeal experience. AMVETS handled over 15,000 appeals annually in recent years and understands the differences between a Notice of Disagreement, a higher-level review, and a Board appeal.
  • Access to VSO networks. AMVETS coordinates with other VSOs and can refer you to specialized support if needed.

Common Questions

Does AMVETS charge any fees?

No. AMVETS is accredited by the VA and prohibited from charging you for representation. The VA accreditation process ensures VSOs meet strict standards. If a representative asks for payment, they are not acting on AMVETS' behalf.

Can AMVETS help if I already received a rating decision?

Yes. AMVETS can file appeals, request supplemental claims if new evidence surfaces, or help you file claims for additional conditions you did not include in your original application. You have one year from a rating decision to file a Notice of Disagreement.

What if I want to switch from another VSO to AMVETS?

You can change representatives at any time by filing a new VA Form 21-22. AMVETS will handle the transition and retrieve your claim file from the VA.
