What Is DD-214

The DD-214, officially the Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, is your military service record document issued by the Department of Defense. It proves your service dates, rank, discharge status, and reason for separation. The VA will not process any disability claim without a DD-214 on file.

Your DD-214 serves as the foundation for every VA benefit you're eligible to receive. It establishes the baseline facts the VA uses to determine service connection, calculate disability ratings, and process compensation payments. Without it, your claim cannot move forward.

Why the VA Needs It

The VA uses specific information from your DD-214 to verify eligibility and process your disability claim:

  • Service dates confirm you served during an eligible period
  • Character of discharge (honorable, general, other than honorable, dishonorable, bad conduct) determines benefit eligibility. Only honorable and general discharges qualify for standard VA disability benefits
  • Rank and military occupation code help establish what exposures or duties you performed
  • Separation reason indicates whether you were medically discharged or separated for other reasons

When you file VA Form 21-526EZ (Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits), the VA cross-references your DD-214 against your disability claims. If information doesn't match, the VA will request clarification before proceeding.

Obtaining Your DD-214

If you don't have your DD-214, request it using the SF-180 (Request Pertaining to Military Records) form. You can submit it online at archives.gov, by mail, or in person at your local veterans service office. Processing typically takes 7 to 10 business days. If you're filing a VA disability claim and don't have your DD-214, submit your claim anyway. The VA can retrieve it directly from the National Personnel Records Center.

DD-214 in Your Disability Claim

Your DD-214 directly impacts your C&P exam and rating decision. During your Compensation and Pension exam, the VA examiner will review your service dates and separation reason to contextualize your claimed conditions. If you claim service connection for a condition, your DD-214 establishes when you were serving. Your nexus letter (the medical evidence linking your condition to service) must align with service dates on your DD-214. If your nexus letter references events or exposures outside your documented service period, the VA will deny service connection.

For conditions like Agent Orange exposure (Vietnam service), burn pit exposure (Iraq/Afghanistan), or military sexual trauma, the VA uses your DD-214 dates to determine if you were in the theater during the relevant period. This is not subjective; the dates must match VA policy requirements.

Discharge Status Matters

Your character of discharge listed on the DD-214 determines eligibility:

  • Honorable discharge: Full access to all VA disability benefits with no restrictions
  • General discharge under honorable conditions: Eligible for disability benefits, though some specialized programs may have additional requirements
  • Other than honorable, bad conduct, dishonorable: Barred from VA disability compensation unless you obtain a discharge upgrade or receive a VA waiver (rare)

If your discharge status is problematic, a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) can advise on discharge upgrade options, which fall outside the VA disability claims process and are handled by the military branch that discharged you.

Common Questions

  • Can I file a VA disability claim without my DD-214? Yes. Submit your claim with whatever documentation you have (military ID, LES statements, discharge papers). The VA has access to service records and will retrieve your DD-214 during processing. However, having it ready speeds up the process.
  • What if my DD-214 shows an unfamiliar duty or date? Review it carefully. If it contains errors (wrong service dates, incorrect rank, wrong separation reason), request a correction from your military branch before submitting your VA claim. Errors on the DD-214 will cause problems during your rating decision.
  • Does the DD-214 affect my appeals? No, but it cannot be changed once your claim enters the VA system. If you notice errors after filing, you must correct them with the military branch, then request the VA update its records. A VSO can help file this request.
  • SF-180 - The form you use to request your DD-214 from military records
  • Service Connection - The VA determination that your disability is connected to military service, which rests on the service dates and circumstances documented in your DD-214
